Martha Okoro, our guiding light, lived in Ekenobizi, Abia State, Nigeria, where she raised her family alone with unwavering love and determination. Despite her own struggles, she made sure her children received an education and extended her compassion to other children in her community, providing them with food and learning opportunities. Martha's greatest wish was for every child in her village to have the chance to pursue their dreams through education. Her life was a testament to selfless giving and hope. Though she left us too soon in 2012, her dream continues to inspire and guide us, a beacon of love and dedication that lives on through our work.
In 2012, after decades abroad, Mercy Okoro-Statter returned to Nigeria to care for her ill mother, Martha. While visiting the village, she was shocked to find an 8-year-old boy named Mark chained outside his home, accused of witchcraft following his mother’s death. After securing his release through a UK charity, Mercy and her husband Mike realized that Mark’s plight was not unique. In 2013, they founded Martha's Dream to fulfill Martha’s vision and provide education to combat the ignorance behind such tragic stories.
In 2017, after years of fundraising, Martha's Academy opened its doors to 20 pupils in Biafra, a region ravaged by civil war where many children are orphans or must work instead of attending school. Due to high demand, the Academy has expanded to include a Nursery and six Primary classes, serving around 190 students annually.
Our vision is to build both a primary and secondary school, offering academic, vocational, and business training. We also plan to establish a school-farm in Ekenobizi to promote sustainable farming practices and improve literacy in the community.

Our proudest achievement is providing free education to children who otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to attend school. Many of these children would have been forced into labor or left to fend for themselves, doomed to a life of poverty without the ability to read or write.
Remarkably, students who take the Nigerian Common Entrance Exam after Primary 6 at our school consistently achieve top grades in Abia State. This success demonstrates that our free education is of the highest quality, and we are committed to maintaining these standards. Our reputation for excellence has grown, leading to increasing requests from families eager to enroll their children.
We have also been able to sponsor secondary school education for students lacking financial means. Many of these students have excelled and are now applying to universities in 2024. Without Martha's Dream, these opportunities would have been out of reach.
A key strength of Martha’s Dream is our dedicated local team in Nigeria. Our director, Emmanuel Okoro, brings extensive experience as a head teacher in international schools across Asia, and our teaching staff are all qualified graduates. We ensure our staff are paid regularly and at above-average wages. We have a strict zero-tolerance policy for corporal punishment, a practice regrettably common in many Nigerian schools.
One in three children in Nigeria does not attend primary school, and this number gets higher in the area where we operate. The Biafra Region was devastated by a civil war in the '70s and the Igbo people have been subjects to violence and discrimination since.
This makes the area very poor with high levels of poverty, mortality and orphanhood. Most children who are born there are destined to a life in poverty, or premature death.
We believe that through education children will be given the tools to break free of this circle of poverty.
